Safeguarding - Keeping Children Safe

Netherseal St.Peter’s is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. We have a whole school safeguarding approach to ensure that children are kept safe and well, and as part of this the school is part of the Stopping Domestic Abuse Together (SDAT) initiative - our aim is for every child who attends our school to feel safe and happy.

Whilst safeguarding children and young people is everyone's responsibility, we have a dedicated Safeguarding Team in school to manage concerns and coordinate with other agencies.

Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL): Mrs M Machell

Deputy Designated Lead (DDSL): Miss J Halsey

If you have concerns out of school hours,  please contact Call Derbyshire on 01629 533190

Staff in school have a duty under the law to report any concerns that a child may be suffering significant harm, to keep records which relate to safeguarding work, and share information with partner agencies when there are safeguarding concerns. Whilst our aim is to work in partnership with our families, if there is any conflict of interest in informing or including parents/carers with investigations around concerns, the welfare of the children will always be our priority and inform our decision making.

All staff are aware that abuse, neglect and safeguarding issues are rarely standalone events that can be covered by one definition or label. In most cases multiple issues will overlap one another.Abuse is a form of maltreatment of a child. Somebody may abuse or neglect a child by inflicting harm or failing to act to prevent harm. They may be abused by an adult(s) or by another child(ren).Behaviours linked to drug taking, alcohol abuse, truanting and sexting put children in danger.                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Safeguarding issues can manifest themselves via child-on-child abuse, including cyber-bullying, gender-based violence and sexting.

CHILDREN MISSING FROM EDUCATION:

We are concerned about any child missing education not only in the way that it impacts on the pupil’s potential achievement but also in relation to their safety and welfare.

Parents have a legal responsibility to ensure all their children of compulsory school age are receiving a suitable education (Section 7 of the Education Act 1996).

Any child that is missing from school and their whereabouts is not known, their destination school is not known or are missing out on education are referred to as 'children missing from education (CME)' and school is required to report to the local authority.

Derbyshire has a full time worker who co-ordinates the tracking, identification and liaisons of Children Missing from Education (CME)

Keeping children safe is everybody's responsibility...If you have any concerns about a child or young person in our community, please contact Call Derbyshire on 01629 533190 immediately or The NSPCC on 0808 800 5000

We work closely with many agencies, including health, the police, the multi-agency teams and Social Care to help keep children safe in 'real life' and online. We access key support and guidance through Derbyshire Safeguarding Children's Board, a statutory body established in accordance with The Children's Act & Working Together to Safeguard Children. DSCB provides school staff and other professionals with important safeguarding information which is also available to the public, children, young people, parents and carers.

From time to time, we all go through situations which are difficult to cope with. At these times, we need help and advice but finding the right department or agency can be difficult. The Early Help Offer gives parents a framework for asking for support. An assessment form may be completed, or signposting given, to provide parents and families with services who can help. This may include behaviour support, parenting advice, bereavement counselling, health advice, or for specific medical issues (the list is not finite).

At Netherseal St. Peter’s, we utilise any service we need to, in order to best support our pupils and their families. We are always happy to help where we can and will try to help you find the right agency to support you. We will ask for individual tailored support that best meets the needs of individual situations. If in any doubt, please come and talk to us. We are here for you.
